FEATURES: Technical Support & Help Guides – Installing Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2: Yuri’s Revenge

This guide will show you how to install Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2: Yuri’s Revenge on modern operating systems, with different sections covering different releases of the game.

This is an expansion pack for Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, so make sure you install the base game first.

I have the retail CD version and DO NOT use Windows 10.

  1. Make sure you have installed the retail CD version of Red Alert 2 (the base game) by these guidelines before proceeding.
  2. Insert the Yuri’s Revenge disc to your CD/DVD drive.
  3. If you are not using Windows XP, exit the autorun and run setup.exe from the disc’s setup subfolder as administrator.
  4. Install the game as you normally would.
  5. Patch the game to version 1.001, the latest official patch. You can use the patches from our site linked below, or one of these mirrors for all languages.
  6. If you are not using Windows XP, browse to the directory you installed the game to and set gamemd.exe and ra2md.exe to always run as administrator and in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows 7.
  7. If necessary, scroll down to the “Handling Red Alert 2 and Yuri’s Revenge on Windows 8 / 8.1 / 10” section at the bottom of this page and follow the instructions.
  8. Run the game.

I have the retail CD version and DO use Windows 10.

For some reason, the Red Alert 2 installer refuses to work on Windows 10. Coupled with the removal of the SafeDisc driver, there is (at the time of writing this guide) no way to install the game from the retail discs directly on Windows 10.

The procedure below bypasses the problem by using the multiplayer-only release by XWIS (which was created under EA’s permission) and placing the necessary files for singleplayer usage.

  1. Make sure you have installed the adapted XWIS’ multiplayer version of Red Alert 2 (the base game) by these guidelines before proceeding.
  2. Download and install XWIS’ Yuri’s Revenge multiplayer distribution from this page.
  3. From your Yuri’s Revenge disc, copy multimd.mix, thememd.mix, maps03md.mix, and mov03md.mix to your Red Alert 2 directory.
  4. If you are not using Windows XP, browse to the directory you installed the game to and set gamemd.exe and ra2md.exe to always run as administrator and in compatibility mode for Windows 7.
  5. If necessary, scroll down to the “Handling Red Alert 2 and Yuri’s Revenge on Windows 8 / 8.1 / 10” section at the bottom of this page and follow the instructions.
  6. Run the game.

I have the The First Decade version.

Although the installer of The First Decade enables you to select the games you wish to install, this guide assumes that you intend to install C&C: Red Alert 2 and Yuri’s Revenge only. For a more complete solution, check out the guide titled Fully Updating The First Decade.
  1. Make sure you have installed The First Decade version of Red Alert 2 (the base game) by these guidelines before proceeding.
  2. Insert your The First Decade disc to your DVD drive.
  3. If you are not using Windows XP, exit the autorun, and run setup.exe on the disc as administrator.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen. Choose a custom installation, and for the time being, select C&C: Red Alert 2 and Yuri’s Revenge to install.
  5. If you did not disable User Account Control on your computer, install The First Decade to a folder which is NOT Program Files (x86).
  6. Wait for the installation to complete.
  7. Apply the TFD unofficial patch 1.03 rev4.
  8. If you are not using Windows XP, browse to the directory you installed the game to and set gamemd.exe and ra2md.exe to always run as administrator and in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows 7.
  9. Scroll down to the “Handling Red Alert 2 and Yuri’s Revenge on Windows 8 / 8.1 / 10” section at the bottom of this page and follow the instructions.
  10. Run the game.

Download tfd-103-rev4.exe (164 MB)

I have the Origin version from The Ultimate Collection.

  1. Make sure you have installed the Origin (The Ultimate Collection) version of Red Alert 2 (the base game) by these guidelines before proceeding. Yuri’s Revenge was installed along with it, so the following steps refer to the expansion only.
  2. If you are not using Windows XP, browse to the directory you installed the game to and set game.exe and ra2.exe to always run as administrator and in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows 7.
  3. If necessary, scroll down to the “Handling Red Alert 2 and Yuri’s Revenge on Windows 8 / 8.1 / 10” section at the bottom of this page and follow the instructions.
  4. Run the game.

Handling Red Alert 2 and Yuri’s Revenge on Windows 8 / 8.1 / 10

Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 require additional steps to get C&C: Red Alert 2 and Yuri’s Revenge running. One option is to move ts-ddraw.dll from an existing and fully patched Tiberian Sun installation to the Red Alert 2 directory OR place ddwrapper there and apply the C&C Graphics Patcher to executables of both Red Alert 2 and Yuri’s Revenge. Alternatively, you can use DDrawCompat for the same thing. Should that fail, the other option is to apply XWIS’ fix for Red Alert 2 and fix for Yuri’s Revenge – however, this will make the games incompatible with Ares-powered mods (like Mental Omega APYR) and probably CnCNet.

Finishing touches and notes

The resolution can be changed by opening ra2md.ini in Notepad or a similar text editor and changing the ScreenWidth and ScreenHeight values under the [Video] section (may require a first launch if they are not present).
