C&C Community News – Early September 2017

Several things have been going on in the C&C community in the past few days, so we’ll go through them briefly:

  • The Red Alter mod team have started working after a long hiatus, and have released the source models of what they’ve created so far.
  • Kane’s Wrath Reloaded (a Tiberium Wars mod despite the name) has been updated to version 1.91.
  • Rampastring’s alternate Tiberian Sun client has been updated to version 5.40 (use 5.30, then update it manually), and now even features the missions that were exclusive to the demo.
  • An unofficial hotfix was released for the Zero Hour mod Shockwave, which resolves the pink Pathfinder texture on snow maps, fixes Kwai in the General’s Challenge and makes Tao use his advanced nuclear silo in skirmishes and the General’s Challenge. A full install of Shockwave version 1.201 is still required.
  • OpenRA playtest version 20170902 has been released, featuring 40 resolved issues, a balance overhaul and the new “Agenda” map for the Red Alert mod, balance tweaks for the Tiberian Dawn mod, and a new version of the Mod SDK.

C&C Music Monday – Defend the Base

This week’s pick for Music Monday is the Yuri’s Revenge track Defend the Base. Another slower composition, it was positioned as a late game track, and to me personally it brings memories of all those prolonged matches. A new track will be posted next Monday. And as always, don’t forget to share this on social media using the hashtags #CnCMusicMonday and #MusicMonday.

Throwback Thursday for 31st August

31 August is celebrated as the anniversary of the release of the original Command & Conquer from 1995. Today’s Throwback Thursday feature goes back to the original game’s Nod ending, where Nod Netrunners transfer their consciousness to virtual orbs within cyberspace in an attempt to hack the GDI ion cannon uplink, but should these orbs be destroyed, the Netrunner is killed. Their chairs even make an appearance in C&C Renegade. They were portrayed by Ed Del Castillo, Ian Pugh and Frank Klepacki.

Check back again next Thursday for another Throwback. Send in your ideas for future instalments. C&C Music Monday – Running Through Pipes

This week’s pick for Music Monday is Running Through Pipes from C&C Red Alert: The Aftermath. Like many tracks from the expansions for the original Red Alert, this track was apparently made to create a specific mood rather than follow a hectic battle. A new track will be posted next Monday. And as always, don’t forget to share this on social media using the hashtags #CnCMusicMonday and #MusicMonday.

Tiberian Dawn Redux Campaigns Nearing Completion

After 10 years of tedious work and dedication, the C&C Tiberian Dawn Redux mod team is nearing completion of the complete remaster of the original GDI and Nod campaigns from the original Tiberian Dawn. The final campaign missions are slated for release this fall, along with balancing tweaks, revised coding and scripting edits to further polish the gameplay experience. Throwback Thursday for 17th August

This week in our Throwback Thursday feature, we put the spotlight on another character in our Ladies of C&C subseries – Lieutenant Sandra Telfair, who was played by Grace Park. Telfair served at GDI InOps prior to and during the Third Tiberium War, under the command of General Jack Granger, and provided intelligence on Nod and Scrin activity.

New Article: The Technological “Cousins” of C&C

tech_cousins_of_cnc.png

While we aim to cover all things Command & Conquer, we often forget that they had two “cousin” series: Dune and The Battle for Middle-earth. In this new CNCNZ.com article, I look at each of the games in both series individually, first giving the basic information on them and core gameplay points, after which I give my subjective view on them. I’ve also shared links to their official and fan-made patches, as well as multiplayer servers where you can play them. Click here to see the article.

Archon Mode in Red Alert 3

Red Alert 3 rarely gets love from modders. But when it does, it gets it big time. A group of fans from the Chinese modding community developed Archon mode maps. For those who don’t know, Archon mode refers to a multiplayer mode in StarCraft II where two players control the same base and army. In these maps for Red Alert 3, though, there is the limitation that one player controls the base construction, unit production and managing top secret protocols, while the other controls units and participates in battles. The maps included are the most common 1v1 maps: BattleBase Beta, Cabana Republic, Fire Island, Industrial Strength, Infinity Isle, Snow Plow, and Temple Prime.
