Service Depot: Installing Dune 2000

This guide will show you how to install Dune 2000 on modern operating systems.

Installation – conventional

  1. Insert the Dune 2000 disc to the CD/DVD drive.
  2. If running a 32-bit system, exit the autorun and run setup.exe from the disc as administrator. (not applicable for Windows XP)
If running a 64-bit system, use WineVDM to run setup.exe from the disc to properly emulate it as a 16-bit application.
  3. Install the game.
  4. Patch the game to version 1.06, the latest official patch. (mirrors: Dune2K.com, C&C Communications Center)
  5. Download the unofficial 1.06p patch and apply it.
  6. Browse to the game’s directory and set DUNE2000.exe to always run as administrator. (not applicable to Windows XP)
  7. Run the game.

Installation – alternative

The game’s installer is 16-bit, and is unable to run on 64-bit systems by default. To bypass this, use this custom installer to extract the files from setup.z found within the disc to a user-defined directory. Then, perform the following:

  1. From the disc, copy the folders MISSIONS, MOVIES and MUSIC to the DUNE\Data subfolder in the installation directory.
  2. Open DUNE\RESOURCE.CFG in the installation directory with a text editor, and change with the following lines:
    data\
    data\movies\
    data\music\
    data\missions\
    data\maps\
  3. Save the file and close it.
  4. Patch the game to version 1.06, the latest official patch. (mirrors: Dune2K.com, C&C Communications Center)
  5. Download the unofficial 1.06p patch and apply it.
  6. Browse to the game’s directory and set DUNE2000.exe to always run as administrator. (not applicable to Windows XP)
  7. Run the game.

Explanation

For many old games which used DirectDraw to display graphics, including Dune 2000, there have been problems when running on Windows Vista and newer due to deteriorating support for that library.

Multiple custom-made display wrappers have appeared over the years. They differ in their implementation, and perform better in different games and for different hardware.

Usage

Switch to any of the following alternatives by extracting them to the game directories:
