FEATURES: Technical Support & Help Guides – Installing Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun & Firestorm

This guide will show you how to install Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun and its Firestorm expansion pack on modern operating systems, with different sections covering different releases of the game.

I have the retail CD version.

  1. Insert either Tiberian Sun disc to your CD/DVD drive.
  2. If you are not using Windows XP, exit the autorun and run setup.exe from the disc’s setup subfolder as administrator.
  3. Install the game as you normally would.
  4. Repeat steps 2-4 with the Firestorm disc.
  5. Patch the game to version 2.03, the latest official patch. You can use the patch for your language from our site linked below, or one of these mirrors.
  6. Patch the game with the latest version of FunkyFr3sh’s setup.
  7. Apply your desired settings (resolution, graphics levels…) from the TSConfig.exe file that you now have in your Tiberian Sun directory.
  8. If you are not using Windows XP, browse to the directory you installed the game to and set game.exe and sun.exe to always run as administrator and in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows 7.
  9. Run the game.

Should you wish to use the no-CD function present in TSConfig.exe, you must copy these files from your discs to your Tiberian Sun directory:

  • Tiberian Sun GDI disc – maps01.mix, movies01.mix, multi.mix (except if you install Firestorm), scores.mix, sidecd01.mix, TS1.dsk.
  • Tiberian Sun Nod disc – maps02.mix, movies02.mix, sidecd02.mix, TS2.dsk.
  • Tiberian Sun Firestorm disc – e01scd01.mix, e01scd02.mix, maps03.mix, movies03.mix (you need to rename this to something like expand03.mix), multi.mix (overwrite the one from vanilla Tiberian Sun), scores01.mix, TS3.dsk.

I have the freeware version from Electronic Arts.

  1. Download and extract this release to a directory of your choosing.
  2. Using Notepad or an equivalent text editor, open tibsun_regadd.reg from within this release (DO NOT run it yet!) and modify all instances of the InstallPath value to the directory that holds game.exe and sun.exe. Note that two backslashes (\) need to be used in the path.
  3. Run tibsun_regadd.reg by double-clicking on it.
  4. Patch the game with the latest version of FunkyFr3sh’s setup.
  5. Apply your desired settings (resolution, graphics levels…) from the TSConfig.exe file that you now have in your Tiberian Sun directory.
  6. If you are not using Windows XP, browse to the directory you installed the game to and set game.exe and sun.exe to always run as administrator and in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows 7.
  7. Run the game.

I have the freeware version from the C&C Communications Center.

  1. Download and install this release. Tick options for missions, music and videos. Tick other options at your preference.
  2. Apply your desired settings (resolution, graphics levels…) from the TSConfig.exe file that you now have in your Tiberian Sun directory.
  3. If you are not using Windows XP, browse to the directory you installed the game to and set game.exe and sun.exe to always run as administrator and in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows 7.
  4. Run the game.

I have the The First Decade version.

Although the installer of The First Decade enables you to select the games you wish to install, this guide assumes that you intend to install C&C: Tiberian Sun and Firestorm only. For a more complete solution, check out the guide titled Fully Updating The First Decade.
  1. Insert your The First Decade disc to your DVD drive.
  2. If you are not using Windows XP, exit the autorun, and run setup.exe on the disc as administrator.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen. Choose a custom installation, and for the time being, select C&C: Tiberian Sun and Firestorm to install.
  4. If you did not disable User Account Control on your computer, install The First Decade to a folder which is NOT Program Files (x86).
  5. Wait for the installation to complete.

I have the Origin version from The Ultimate Collection.

  1. Download and install the game from the Origin client as you normally would.
  2. After the installation is complete, right-click on the game’s cover in your Origin library, click “Game Properties” and disable Origin In-Game/cloud saves. This will prevent Origin from overwriting any manual edits to the game.
  3. Apply Bibber’s fixed launchers for The Ultimate Collection.

Finishing touches and notes

You will be required to choose a graphics renderer in the TSConfig.exe tool. There is no one solution, as different renderers work better in different computer configurations. Experiment with this until you find the one that works best for you. Alternatively, you can use DDrawCompat instead of the usual renderers. This tool will also require you to enable no-CD mode if it is not already ticked.
