FEATURES: Technical Support & Help Guides – Installing Command & Conquer Gold & The Covert Operations

This guide will show you how to install Command & Conquer Gold and its The Covert Operations expansion pack on modern operating systems, with different sections covering different releases of the game.

I have the retail CD version.

  1. Make sure you have installed DirectX 9.0c by these guidelines before proceeding.
  2. Insert either Command & Conquer Gold disc to your CD/DVD drive, or mount the ISOs from the freeware release using Daemon Tools / PowerISO / MagicISO or equivalent tool. Check this guide to see what this means (but don’t use it to install the game, this guide is more up-to-date).
  3. If you are not using Windows XP, exit the autorun and run setup.exe from the disc’s setup subfolder as administrator.
  4. Install the game as you normally would.
  5. Patch the game to the latest version of Nyerguds’ unofficial 1.06 patch (which includes The Covert Operations expansion pack).
  6. Apply your desired settings (resolution, graphics levels…) from the CCConfig.exe file that you now have in your Command & Conquer Gold directory.
  7. If you are not using Windows XP, browse to the directory you installed the game to and set C&C95.exe to always run as administrator and in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3.
  8. Run the game.

I have the freeware version from Nyerguds.

  1. Download and install the full release from this page.
  2. Apply your desired settings (resolution, graphics levels…) from the CCConfig.exe file that you now have in your Command & Conquer Gold directory.
  3. Run the game.

I have the The First Decade version.

Although the installer of The First Decade enables you to select the games you wish to install, this guide assumes that you intend to install Command & Conquer Gold and The Covert Operations only. For a more complete solution, check out the guide titled Fully Updating The First Decade.
  1. Make sure you have installed DirectX 9.0c by these guidelines before proceeding.
  2. Insert your The First Decade disc to your DVD drive.
  3. If you are not using Windows XP, exit the autorun, and run setup.exe on the disc as administrator.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen. Choose a custom installation, and for the time being, select Command & Conquer and The Covert Operations to install.
  5. If you did not disable User Account Control on your computer, install The First Decade to a folder which is NOT Program Files (x86).
  6. Wait for the installation to complete.
  7. Patch the game to the latest version of Nyerguds’ unofficial 1.06 patch.
  8. Apply your desired settings (resolution, graphics levels…) from the CCConfig.exe file that you now have in your Command & Conquer Gold directory.
  9. If you are not using Windows XP, browse to the directory you installed the game to and set C&C95.exe to always run as administrator and in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3.
  10. Run the game.

I have the Origin version from The Ultimate Collection.

  1. Make sure you have installed DirectX 9.0c by these guidelines before proceeding.
  2. Download and install the game from the Origin client as you normally would.
  3. After the installation is complete, right-click on the game’s cover in your Origin library, click “Game Properties” and disable Origin In-Game/cloud saves. This will prevent Origin from overwriting any manual edits to the game.
  4. Apply Bibber’s fixed launchers for The Ultimate Collection.
  5. Patch the game to the latest version of Nyerguds’ unofficial 1.06 patch.

Finishing touches and notes

You will be required to choose a graphics renderer in the CCConfig.exe tool. There is no one solution, as different renderers work better in different computer configurations. Experiment with this until you find the one that works best for you. This tool will also require you to enable no-CD mode if it is not already ticked.
